Breakout Box for Quest Version 2
I love my Oculus Quest, but one thing I do find a bit limiting is the amount of time I can use it due to its weight and pressure. So I have an idea to fix for this for version 2.
For version 2 of the Oculus Quest, I was wonderubg if a better design would be a breakout box which attches to your hips with an elastic belt. A single attacahable cable could be used from the headset to the breakout box in order to transfer the data for the cameras, controller sensors, microphone, speakers, and video, (would USB3 have enough bandwidth and be low latency enough for this?) along with any other data.
This might seem like a step backwards at first, but the cable could be made to be adjustable in length, and could travel under the users shirt if necessary. This would provide multiple benefits:
- A larger battery could be put into the breakout box
- The head unit would no longer be as heavy
- The new design would still be totally cable free in that you would not need to worry about tripping over anything
- Upgrading of the breakout box without upgrading the headset and vice versa might be possible, reducing cost to users for upgrades in the future or allowing progressive updrades which promotes saleability.
