Add Rec-room strafing style free locomotion to Home
I know lots of people have asked for strafing in the locomotion options, and honestly it's appalling to me that this feature (such a simple feature, if you ask me) hasn't been added yet, so I'm here to give some advice for the Home devs on what game specifically to look at for a solid example of what to do. Rec room. Now I know, Home is UE4 and Rec Room is Unity, but I myself took Rec Room's snap turning, strafe-enabled locomotion style and ported it over to a Robo Recall mod which lets you run around the city fighting robots instead of teleporting, and it works great, so I know it can be done. I'd even provide the code I have if you guys needed it.
The controls are simple: Left joystick acts as a normal third person/ first person joystick, moving forward and backwards when the joystick is pushed up and down, and strafing left or right when the stick is pushed left or right, respectively. Then, the right controller does NOTHING when pushed up or down, but when flicked left or right rotates the player, either with smooth turning (an option you guys already have in Home) or with variable snap turning (45 degrees being the best option, imo). Then the A button is used to jump, and clicking the left joystick doubles your walking speed (something I think you guys desperately need to add, your free-walking speed is painfully slow, like 80-yr-old with a tennis ball walker slow. In the time it takes to get from one end of a Home environment to the other in VR free walking, I could go from one end of my duplex to the other 5 times. It's just bad. speed us up, please.
Now I know what all you devs are thinking: But that will make you all extremely dizzy, right? Well, I will admit that this style of locomotion isn't for everyone.
BUT it is for those who have the VR legs to stomach it, want to be as creative as possible in Home and hate teleporting. I am one of those people. If you're worried about it possibly making people sick, just pop up a warning that has to be accepted before they enable the mode. Leaving the mode out because a few people might get sick is no excuse in 2019. People have been in VR for long enough to have their VR legs, and they're getting tired of not having the option to run. I hear it all over the internet, so it shouldn't be news for anyone, especially not you devs.
Don't mean to be harsh, but Home will not succeed in being the brilliant platform you guys want it to be unless you can make the locomotion more fluid. VRChat is doing way more things than you guys, but they got locomotion right. It's time you do the same. And I can't wait to see how Home explodes in popularity once you all do that!
