Micro-stuttering introduced by trying 2.0
Oculus Customer Support requested I post this comment in the forums:
Dell Alienware R3 OLED 16/512/gtx1060/ 2 sensor Rift setup+touch controllers.
I've rarely had time to use this amazing Rift since I decided on a CyberMonday deal, but until I tried 2.0 all was buttery smooth. Excellent. However, that was on the original Nvidia 385.14 that shipped on the Dell and the 'Classic' Oculus client as of Dec 1st... As said, the experience was always buttery smooth, never myself or friends ever noticed any stutter. A beautiful experience. When I attempted your new Rift 2.0 core two days ago, you 'forced' me to upgrade to Nvidia latest drivers i.e. by the 2.0 setup program: which meant 388.59 drivers for me. I was shocked (!) by micro stutters everywhere, every 5-10 secs. No good. Rolled back Nvidia in Device manager, back to 385.14. Nothing else has changed, and I only use this PC for the Rift, all sensor setup the same, all else the same. I proceeded to turn off Public beta channel, i.e. it reinstalled old Classic Oculus Home client - ALL FIXED. Hope that helps, but I'm worried about future 'forced' updates... I did try the old Oculus client with the 388.59 drivers, and still those micro stutters. To confirm, rolling back to 385.14 fixed it all.
Otherwise, all is great and I applaud your technology. It is incredible.
Reference to the reddit thread talking about this issue
Does it have something to do with NVAftermath (GPU crash detection)? Since you mention every 5 to 10 seconds, it sounds similar to this: https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/feedback-for-epic/1457519-4-19-4-20-editor-packaged-games-have-hangs-hiccups-constantly?p=1509748#post1509748
I submitted a support ticket for this issue too as per the request of the reddit support staff.
Support however told me that I need to post here instead.Mixed messages but I suppose that happens. My support ticket number is #592813 if a dev needs to look at my logs.
My support ticket text below here
I see a lot of complaints about stuttering in Rift Core 2.0 Beta on reddit and I have been suffering from it for a while too. I have no issues in games so never really bothered to submit a support ticket. I just don't bother with spending time in Oculus Home 2.0.
I upgraded my Nvidia drivers and my Asus Gaming Pro z170 BIOS yesterday and there is still enough stutter to be a problem which probably should be looked into.
I checked the Oculus Tray Tool and ASW is not kicking in during these stutters so I'm not sure really what the issue is.
I cleared my logs and went into Oculus Home and moved around a bit to make sure the stutter was still there. In particular if you want to narrow down the issue based on some known events.
approx 12:41pm (local AEST time +10 GMT)
* I removed the headset (should be an event in the logs for this)
* Put the headset back on (should be an event in the logs for this)
* Then I turned my head gradually left to right while standing still.
The stutter happened quite a few times so will hopefully be evident in logs.
I'm not really wanting support to find a resolution for me so don't bother asking me to revert out of the beta test channel unless you specifically need me to test anything there. As I said it doesn't really phase me as I just avoid using home due to the stutter.
Hopefully this helps track something down. I was wondering if this might be the new planned PTW which I saw an Oculus rep talk about on reddit recently?
Thanks and if there is anything else you need me to do just ask.
I haven't managed to successfully attach the logs yet but will keep trying.
